Suspension & Steering Repair on the Key Peninsula
A clunk over bumps, a truck that wanders on the highway, or tires wearing on one edge often points to a worn suspension or steering part. We find the specific cause, show you what we found, and when the repair changes your wheel angles, finish with an alignment on our own machine.
Signs your suspension or steering needs attention
Suspension parts wear gradually, so it's easy to get used to the changes. A clunk that's getting louder, or steering that suddenly feels loose, deserves a prompt look. A badly worn ball joint or tie rod end can separate, and if it does, you can lose steering control of that wheel.
Watch for these signs:
- Clunking or knocking over bumps, potholes, or driveway edges
- Bouncing that continues after a dip, or a nose that dives hard when you brake
- Wandering on straight roads, so you're constantly correcting the wheel
- Pulling to one side, or a steering wheel that sits off-center
- Tires worn on the inner or outer edge, or with a cupped, scalloped pattern
- Groaning, whining, or heavy steering, especially when parking
- One corner sitting lower than the others, or an air suspension warning light

Why gravel and potholes are hard on your suspension
Gravel roads, long gravel driveways, potholes, and hills are part of daily driving on the Key Peninsula. Every washboard stretch and pothole works your bushings, ball joints, and shocks a little harder, so these parts tend to wear faster than they would on smooth pavement. Heavier vehicles, including many EVs, put even more load on them.
Wet winters matter too. Once the rubber boot on a ball joint or tie rod end tears, water and grit get inside and the joint wears quickly. A torn rack boot lets moisture into the steering rack itself. Torn boots and cracked bushings are easy to spot with the vehicle in the air, so ask us to check them when you're in for maintenance.
How we diagnose it
Guessing at suspension noises gets expensive, so we find the specific part first. Our ASE Certified technicians start by confirming the symptom you describe, then put your vehicle on a two-post lift, where we can see the whole suspension and check each joint for play. We look at:
- Struts and shocks for leaks, damage, and weak damping
- Control arms and their bushings
- Ball joints and inner and outer tie rod ends
- Sway bar links and bushings, a common source of clunks and rattles
- Steering rack or gearbox, pump, and hoses for leaks and play
- Tire wear patterns, which often hint at what's worn
- Air springs, compressor, valves, and height sensors on air-ride vehicles
The repair, then the alignment
Once we know what's worn, we walk you through it, including what needs attention now and what still has life left, and get your approval before any work starts. No upselling.
We replace worn components with OEM or OE-equivalent parts. Struts and shocks are generally replaced in pairs on the same axle so both sides respond the same way. Control arms are often sold with new bushings and a ball joint already installed, and replacing the whole arm can make more sense when several of those parts are worn.
For air suspension, common on European luxury models and some full-size trucks and SUVs, we pin down whether the fault is a leaking air spring, a worn compressor, a valve, or a height sensor before replacing anything. A slow leak can overwork the compressor, so it pays to find the root cause. For hydraulic power steering, we sort out whether it's a leaking hose, the pump, or the rack. Many newer vehicles use electric power steering with no pump or fluid, and there our scan tools help track down the fault.
Replacing tie rods, struts, or control arms can change your wheel angles, so an alignment is usually part of doing the job right. We have our own alignment machine, so there's no trip to another shop afterward.
Bringing your vehicle in
Request an appointment online anytime, or call (253) 884-3431 Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Drop-off starts at 6:00 AM, and after hours you can leave your keys in the key drop to the left of the customer lounge door. If you'd rather wait, we have a customer waiting area.
It helps to tell us when the problem shows up: over bumps, while turning, when braking, or at a certain speed.

Common Questions
Do I need an alignment after suspension or steering work?
Usually, yes. Replacing tie rods, struts, or control arms can change your wheel angles, and even a small change can wear a tire unevenly. We do alignments on our own machine, so it's handled here as part of the repair.
Is it safe to keep driving with a clunking noise?
It depends on the source. A worn sway bar link is usually more annoying than dangerous, but a loose ball joint or tie rod end can fail and cost you steering control. You can't tell which from the driver's seat, so have it checked soon. If the steering feels loose or the vehicle suddenly pulls hard, keep driving to a minimum and call us.
Why are my tires wearing unevenly?
Wear on the inner or outer edge usually means the alignment is off, often because a worn part let it shift. Cupping or scalloping often points to worn shocks or struts, though an out-of-balance tire can cause it too. An alignment won't hold if a joint is loose, which is why the suspension should be checked before the alignment.
Do you work on air suspension and European vehicles?
Yes. We diagnose and repair air suspension on domestic trucks and SUVs and on European makes such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. Our Snap-on and Autel scan tools read the system's fault codes and live sensor data, and along with a visual and leak check, that helps us separate a failed air spring from a compressor, valve, or sensor problem.
