European makes are engineered to their own specifications, and shortcuts can cause real problems. Engine oil should meet the carmaker's own approval, such as Mercedes-Benz 229-series, BMW Longlife or VW 502 00/504 00 and their newer versions. Coolant is specified by the carmaker too, and mixing incompatible types can reduce its corrosion protection.

Many of these cars also need a scan tool for jobs that used to be purely mechanical: resetting the service indicator, retracting an electronic parking brake for a rear brake job, or registering a new battery so the charging system charges it correctly. We handle those steps with professional Snap-on and Autel scan tools and install OEM or OE-equivalent parts.

Some common trouble spots on European cars:

EVs skip oil changes, and hybrids take some of the load off the engine and brakes, but both still need regular care, and most of it is familiar work. Hybrids still get oil changes, usually with the low-viscosity oil the carmaker specifies. Both need brake service, tire and suspension checks, coolant checks and fresh cabin filters.

The 12-volt battery matters more than most people expect. It powers the computers that switch on the high-voltage system, so a weak one can leave a hybrid or EV unable to start or power up, even when the main battery is charged. We test it with our battery testers and replace it when it's failing.

EVs are also heavy, which can wear tires faster and put extra load on suspension parts. We look at both during the multi-point inspection that comes with every maintenance visit, and if the alignment is off, we can adjust it on our own in-house alignment machine.

In a hybrid or EV, the electric motor does much of the slowing, so brake pads often last longer than on a gas-only car. But brakes that rarely work hard have problems of their own. With Pacific Northwest rain, rotors can rust and pit, and caliper slide pins and pistons can stick from lack of use. That's why it's worth having hybrid and EV brakes inspected regularly, and cleaned and lubricated when they need it, instead of waiting for a noise.

Many hybrids and EVs use electronically controlled brake systems, and on some of them the system can build brake pressure on its own, for example when a door opens. Where the manufacturer calls for it, we put the system into its service mode before any brake work starts.

Orange cables mark the high-voltage system, which includes the battery pack, drive motor, inverter and the wiring between them. These parts can carry several hundred volts, so they're never a do-it-yourself job.
