Signs your transmission needs attention

Transmission problems rarely fix themselves, and they often get more expensive the longer you drive on them. Call us if you notice any of these:

Slipping: the engine revs up but the vehicle doesn't pick up speed to match
Harsh, clunky or late shifts, or a pause before it engages Drive or Reverse
Whining, humming or grinding that changes with speed or gear
Reddish or brown fluid spots where you park
A burning smell, especially after a long climb or towing
A check engine or transmission warning light, or a transmission that seems stuck in one gear
On a manual: a clutch that slips, chatters, or engages near the top of the pedal
Clicking when you turn or a vibration when you accelerate, which usually points to a CV axle or driveshaft rather than the transmission itself

How we find the real cause

A transmission complaint isn't always the transmission. Low fluid, a worn mount, a bad CV axle or even an engine misfire can feel like a shifting problem, and it's better to rule those out first.

Diagnosis usually starts with the fluid: its level and its condition, including color, smell and any debris. Many newer transmissions have no dipstick, so checking the level takes a specific procedure at the right fluid temperature.

Next, we connect a professional Snap-on or Autel scan tool to read transmission codes and watch live data, which on many vehicles includes fluid temperature, commanded gear and torque converter slip. A road test shows how it actually behaves, and on the lift we look for leaks and check the mounts and driveline.

Then we walk you through what we found and what it will take to fix it. Nothing gets done without your approval.

Repairs and service we handle in the shop

Plenty of transmission problems can be fixed without replacing the whole unit. Heat is the main thing that breaks down transmission fluid, and long climbs on Key Peninsula hills or towing a boat or trailer both add heat. A vehicle that works hard may need fluid service sooner than its mileage alone suggests.

On a manual transmission, a clutch job typically includes a new disc, pressure plate and release bearing, and the flywheel should be inspected at the same time. A worn or glazed flywheel can cause chatter and shorten the life of a new clutch.

What to expect when you bring it in

Request an appointment online or call (253) 884-3431. We're open Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, right next to Key Center, and drop-off starts at 6:00 AM. After hours, leave your keys in the key drop to the left of the customer lounge door.

Tell us when the problem happens: cold or warmed up, at what speed, going uphill, in which gear. Details like these make it much easier to reproduce on a road test.

Common Questions

How often should transmission fluid be changed?

It depends on the vehicle. Some manufacturers call for service every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, others describe their fluid as "lifetime," and many owner's manuals list shorter intervals for severe use such as towing or frequent hill climbing. We follow the factory maintenance schedule for your vehicle and track your service history, so you'll know when it's due.

My transmission has high miles and has never been serviced. Is a fluid change risky?

Often it's still worth doing, but not always. If the fluid is badly burnt or full of debris, the transmission may already be worn, and fresh fluid won't reverse that. We'll check the fluid first and talk through your options before doing any work.

Can I keep driving if my transmission is slipping?

Drive it as little as possible. Slipping creates heat, heat breaks down the fluid and wears the internal clutches, and a problem that might have been a solenoid or a leak can turn into a full replacement. If it's leaking heavily, won't go into gear, or shows a transmission overheating warning, call us before you drive it in.

What happens if my transmission can't be repaired?

We'll show you what we found and talk through replacing it with a JASPER remanufactured transmission, which JASPER backs with a 3-year/100,000-mile nationwide parts-and-labor warranty on most applications. Many problems, such as a failed solenoid, a valve body fault, a worn clutch, a bad mount or a leaking pan gasket, can be fixed without replacing the whole unit.

Do you work on European cars and hybrids?

Yes. We work on domestic and import vehicles, including European makes like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and Volkswagen, as well as hybrids. Many hybrids build electric drive motors into the transmission, so call first and we'll confirm what we can do for your vehicle.
