Engine Repair and Replacement on the Key Peninsula
A new tick or knock, oil spots under the car, a temperature gauge creeping up, or a timing belt coming due: your engine often gives you a warning before it fails. We track down the cause and fix it, and when an engine is beyond saving, we replace it with a JASPER remanufactured engine.
Signs your engine needs attention
Many engine failures start small. Catching them early can be the difference between replacing a gasket or a sensor and replacing the engine. Bring it in if you notice any of these:
- Oil or coolant spots where you park, or a burning oil smell after a drive
- The temperature gauge climbing, steam from under the hood, or a sweet coolant smell
- Coolant you keep topping off with no leak in sight, or white, sweet-smelling exhaust that doesn't clear up once the engine is warm
- Ticking, tapping or knocking, or a rattle for a few seconds after a cold start
- A check engine light, especially one that flashes
- Rough idle, misfires, hesitation, or a drop in power or fuel economy
- The oil pressure light, or oil that looks milky on the dipstick

How we find the cause
We start with Snap-on and Autel scan tools to read codes and watch live data such as misfire counts, fuel trims and cam timing, then confirm the cause with hands-on checks before recommending parts.
Depending on the symptom, that can mean pressure testing the cooling system, tracing a leak back to where it actually starts with the vehicle up on a lift, or using a thermal imaging camera to spot uneven temperatures, like cold sections in a clogged radiator or a cylinder that's running cooler than the rest because it isn't firing.
A note on milky oil: short trips in cool, damp weather can leave some milky residue under the oil fill cap from condensation. That alone doesn't mean a head gasket has failed, which is why we test instead of guessing.
Then we explain what we found, what's urgent and what can wait, and get your approval before any work starts. No upselling.
The engine repairs we handle
Timing belts have a set replacement interval, and on many engines (called interference engines) a broken belt lets the pistons hit the valves. Replacing the belt on schedule usually costs far less than repairing that damage. On engines where the water pump is driven by the timing belt, it's often the right time to replace the pump, tensioner and idlers too, since they're already exposed.
Timing chains last longer but can stretch, especially when oil changes run late. That can show up as a rattle on a cold start or as cam and crank correlation codes.
A failed head gasket often follows overheating. We confirm it with testing, check the cylinder head for warping, and recommend the repair when the rest of the engine is in good shape. Oil leaks from valve cover gaskets, oil pans, timing covers and seals are common as engines age, and we repair the source of the leak instead of just cleaning up the mess.
When an engine is beyond repair
Some damage usually isn't worth repairing: a spun bearing, a cracked block, or severe internal damage from running too long without oil or coolant. If that's the case, we'll say so plainly and talk through your options, including whether the rest of the vehicle is worth putting a replacement engine into.
When replacement makes sense, we install a JASPER remanufactured engine. Unlike a used engine with an unknown history, a remanufactured engine has been taken apart, cleaned, inspected, machined back to specification and reassembled with new wear parts such as bearings, gaskets and seals. JASPER backs its remanufactured engines with a 3-year/100,000-mile nationwide parts-and-labor warranty on most applications.
Every repair we do is backed by our 2-year/24,000-mile warranty. Learn more on our warranty page.
Bringing your vehicle in
Request an appointment online or call (253) 884-3431. We're right next to Key Center in Gig Harbor, open Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with drop-off starting at 6:00 AM. After hours, leave your keys in the key drop to the left of the customer lounge door.
Tell us what you've noticed: when the noise happens, whether the engine is cold or warm, and anything you've been topping off. If the temperature gauge is in the red, the oil pressure light is on, or you hear a hard knock, stop driving and call us before bringing it in.

Common Questions
Can I keep driving with an engine problem?
It depends on the symptom. A slow oil seep can usually wait a short while if you check the level often, keep it topped up, and it isn't dripping onto the exhaust. Stop driving if the temperature gauge reaches the red, the oil pressure light comes on, the check engine light is flashing, or you hear a deep knock. Driving on through any of those can turn a repairable problem into a much bigger one, such as a damaged catalytic converter or a replacement engine.
When does my timing belt need to be replaced?
Your owner's manual lists the interval for your engine. Many fall somewhere between 60,000 and 105,000 miles, and many also list an age limit, because the rubber ages even when the car sits. Many newer engines use a timing chain instead, which normally has no set replacement interval. If you don't know whether your belt has been replaced, bring your records or give us a call and we'll help you figure out where it stands.
How do I know if my head gasket is blown?
Common signs are coolant loss with no visible leak, white sweet-smelling exhaust, bubbles in the coolant reservoir with the engine running, milky oil, and repeated overheating. Several of those can have other causes, such as a failing thermostat, water pump, radiator cap or cooling fan, a hidden leak, or condensation from short trips, so we test before we recommend a head gasket repair.
Do you work on import and European engines?
Yes. We work on all makes and models of cars, trucks, vans and SUVs, domestic and import, including European makes like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and Volkswagen. Our ASE Certified technicians use manufacturer-recommended oils and OEM or OE-equivalent parts. We also work on hybrids; if the problem involves the high-voltage system, please call first to confirm.
